Who is Oh Crap! Ninjas?
Every year they come. They come to Los Angeles and another song, another record – another band is born. And sometimes, throughout all the timely songs, dustbin records, and forgotten groups, comes a band that is neither defined by its roots nor confined by the goings-on of their peers. It is their time. And they are called Oh Crap! Ninjas. Combining the radio-friendliness of Switchfoot, the soulfulness of The Fray, and the energy and drive of Foo Fighters, Oh Crap! Ninjas delivers a memorable mixture of progressive and alternative-flavored Pop Rock. Sometimes filled with bright textures, other times sparse and moody, the music of Oh Crap! Ninjas is always melodic and lyrically poignant.
David Gielan, vocals and guitar, Oh Crap! Ninjas’ principle songwriter and founder, paid his musical dues early, touring the U.S. with Garage Rock favorite Gizmo at the tender age of 14 and sharing bills with Indie Rock darlings Trans Am (Thrill Jockey) and Vertical Horizon (RCA). Gielan, equally skilled at singing, guitar, violin, piano, drums, and producing, furthered his playing and burgeoning songwriting by launching the Los Angeles based production company Melody Maker Productions whose clients include Joey Lawrence, Karla Diaz (Jeans), and Grammy-award winning songwriter Keli Nicole Price. David, who has gone on to develop a noteworthy solo career, which includes a nomination from the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2005 for “Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year” and three nominations between 2013 and 2014 from the Artist In Music Awards for “Producer of the Year” and “Singer Songwriter of the Year”, writes songs that seem to come from a dark place, yet are melodically-driven, a contrasting formula which makes Oh Crap! Ninjas’ sound, all its own.
Oh Crap! Ninjas’ sonic strength comes from the Bass playing and producing of Frogs (Ryan McCormack). Frogs, a Berklee College Of Music graduate, has made his livelihood from music, touring the states year-round with groups such as Stars In Stereo, The Neon Calm, Lucy Lawless, and David Hasselhoff. Frogs’ masterful locomotion and use of a commanding technical style allow a platform for the rest of the band to shine. Each of these musicians are accomplished in their own right and have all recorded with some of the nation’s top acts.
On this latest single and fresh off a long hiatus, Oh Crap! Ninjas stayed true to their musical vision in a resounding and formidable way leaving the listener anxious for more, creating a sound that can stand against any of today’s top selling albums. Whether it be airplay of their breakout single, Fallen, on iTunes and college radio stations across the country, being interviewed and performing as a featured artist on Taiwan’s biggest news network (ICI), or the 15,000 hits a month on their website (ohcrapninjas.com), Oh Crap! Ninjas is on their way to the top.
